Abstract
U ovom radu proučavat ćemo razvoj teorije matrica i determinanti od njihovih prvih pojava u drevnim civilizacijama do ključnih otkrića u 20. stoljeću. Rad započinjemo definiranjem osnovnih pojmova vezanih uz matrice, s naglaskom na vrste matrica i njihove operacije. Zatim promatramo prethodnike matrice i njezine najranije oblike, s osvrtom na otkrića drevnih Babilonaca i Kineza. U nastavku pažnju posvećujemo matematičarima kao što su Leibniz, Gauss, Cayley, Sylvester i drugi, koji su postepeno oblikovali teoriju determinanti, a zatim i matrica. U posljednjem dijelu osvrćemo se na djela Bochera, Turnbulla, Aitkena i Mirskyja koja su uspostavila teoriju matrica kao temeljnu granu linearne algebre.
Abstract (english)
In this paper, we will examine the development of matrix and determinant theory from their earliest appearances in ancient civilizations to key discoveries in the 20th century. We begin by defining the fundamental concepts related to matrices, focusing on types of matrices and their operations. Next, we explore the predecessors of the matrix and its earliest forms, reflecting on the discoveries of the ancient Babylonians and Chinese. We then turn our attention to mathematicians such as Leibniz, Gauss, Cayley, Sylvester, and others, who gradually shaped the theory of determinants and subsequently matrices. In the f inal section, we review the works of Bocher, Turnbull, Aitken, and Mirsky, which established matrix theory as a fundamental branch of linear algebra.
