Proportional reasoning is a turning point in the cognitive development of each student, and begins with an understanding of multiplicative connections. There are two ways to form a ratio: a ratio as a multiplicative comparison of two quantities and a ratio as a whole composed of two quantities in such a way as to preserve the multiplicative relationship between these quantities. The complexity of proportional reasoning is manifested in the fact that the ability to perform a cross-multiplication algorithm does not necessarily result in the ability of good proportional reasoning. This type of inference involves many other understandings such as the meaning of ratios as multiplicative comparisons and the establishment of relationships between ratios, fractions, and quotients. Ratios are often expressed in the form of fractions, although ratios and fractions do not always have identical meanings. The research conducted among 8th grade students shows that students mostly use an additive approach to solving problems with proportions, which shows that the multiplicative relationship in most students is not fully adopted. There are three types of problem-solving strategies that include proportions and proportions: non-proportional, transitionalproportional, and proportional strategies. Using these strategies, teachers have the opportunity to assess the degree of development of proportional reasoning of each individual student.
